Despite taking the lead early in the second half, Gadeside failed to secure any points in their opening fixture of the Invitation Cup as Sun Postal Sports came from behind to record a narrow win. Add into the fact that Gadeside contrived to miss a hatful of clearcut chances and this was a bitter pill to swallow.
Manager Darren Hufford stressed urgency of starting well, something which Gadeside have failed to do recently and they seemed to get into there stride fairly quickly with a number of advances on the Sun goal with shots off target. Gadeside managed to deal with Sun by closing down early in the midfield with Spencer Edwards, Mike Ashby and Tariq Khan pressing the midfield. Sun came close to opening the scoring midway through the half when Hakner twice called Hufford into action with good saves as the Gadeside defence were sucked out of position. Gadeside did respond well though and finished the half strongly with Khan and Richard Reid combining well to create chances. Reid came closest when his effort was parried by the keeper and hacked away off the line.
Gadeside picked up from where they had left out in the first half and chances came; Ashby's shot bounced twice along the crossbar with the keeper in no-mans land while the rebound just evaded John Ribiero. But Gadeside did take the lead on the hour mark when James Bryon hit a speculative shot from 18 yards which the Sun keeper comincal juggled before spilling into the net. Gadeside briefly threatened to run away with the game but Khan and Reid were unable to convert the further chances which came their way. It proved crucial as well as Gadeside started to sit back and Sun pressed forward in search of a leveller. It arrived on 73 minutes when a shot from a corner was deflected past the dive of Darren Hufford. Sun kept the pressure on and 10 minutes before the end, Sun grabbed the winner when a striker marched through the defence to slot past Hufford. Gadeside pressed for a way back into the game but were unable to score again. A disappointing defeat.
