Gadeside Rangers picked up their first league win since 13th November, ending a run of five straight defeats - as they put 10 man Mill End Sports to the sword. It was a sorry state of affairs for the premier division's bottom side who played the first few minutes with just 8 men. Gadeside did the job required of them but a late flurry of goals gave the scoreline a rather flattering look though Gadeside could have had plenty more had they been more clinical in front of goal.
Adam Hills was able to welcome back Tom Oliver who had been sorely missed after a nasty illness had ruled him out for the past month. Mill End frustrated Gadeside in the early stages with their high defensive line and Gadeside resorted to long ball football which was not going to get them anywhere. The 10 men of Mill End looked to play on the break but in all honesty they rarely troubled Gadeside. Craig Horwood tested Oliver from distance but that's about as close as they came. Adam Hills should have broken the deadlock but fired straight at the keeper from 8 yards, Jay Evans fired over and Ryan Marks' free-kick brought a good save from the keeper. The opening goal when it came was courtesy of a suicidal cross field pass by Dean Ryan who gave Russ Popplewell the simple chance of firing past a stranded keeper. Gadeside continued to dominate but were struggling to add further goals. Hills' run opened up space but his extra touch was unnecessary and the ball was hacked away while Ben Higginson's marauding run saw him fire at the keeper from distance. Gadeside did double their advantage just before half-time when Hills' chip into the danger area allowed Tom Mitchell to turn and feed Jay Evans who steered the ball home for his 6th of the season.
The second half was always likely to see the visitors start to tire as Gadeside's extra man advantage began to show. That's just what happened. Gadeside moved the ball around with confidence and stretched their opponents with ease. Ben Higginson scored his first goal since March 2009 when his excellent cross evaded the head of Tom Mitchell but wrong-footed the keeper to nestle into the far corner. The fourth came from a classic counter attack as Evans fed Popplewell who drew the keeper before squaring to Adam Hills who slid home his first (first team) goal of the season and his first since April 2009, incidentally against Mill End Sports. The visitors grabbed a goal back when Ben Higginson's underhit backpass allowed Jack Hiscock to nip in past Oliver and dribble the ball into an empty net. Ryan Marks, who had generally had a fairly quiet game by his standards - then popped up with the goal of the game when he lobbed the keeper from 25 yards before he was replaced by Joe Pizans. The pacey striker didn't take long to find his feet and his powerful run into right channel saw him find Mitchell at the far post and he finished well.
With the Mill End defence all at sea in the final minutes Pizans took the opportunity to grab his sixth and seventh goals of the season, both clinical finishes from the penalty spot and then Tom Mitchell got into double figures for the season with the final goal of the game when he calmly finished across the keeper to wrap up a convincing, albeit expected victory against Mill End. Gadeside did what they had to do though much tougher tests will lie ahead. Attentions turn to the defence of the Presidents Cup over the next few weeks; starting with a tough trip to Carpenders Park Rangers next week.
