Gadeside Rangers Reserves were dumped out of the Challenge Cup after a lacklustre performance against a team one division above them. Had Gadeside put in a performance like the week before gripping 2-1 win over Carefree Athletic, this could well have been a cricket score. As it was, it wasn't to be.
Rangers started strongly and controlled the game for the first 20 minutes, the goal came as good midfield work set up Bryon who cut the ball back for Michael Kayembe to grab his second of the season. Gadeside were strolling and complacency began to set in, passes were going astray and the tempo was nowhere near expected. Watford Irish drew level on 40 minutes when a cross came in and the striker was allowed too much time and finished neatly in the bottom right corner.
Half time saw a few frank words about the performance and Gadeside came out of the blocks and lead again through a free-kick from Putman was glanced in by skipper Mark Cassidy for his first goal in the Red and Black. From there it went down hill, Watford Irish equalised when a swirling ball tempted Matt Day out to come and collect, he got nowhere near it and the striker headed into an empty neat. A carbon copy then came 3 minutes later and Gadeside were behind.
Despite pushing for the equaliser it never came, and Gadeside once again will rue the fact that they missed opportunities and should have won comfortably. As the saying goes “You don’t shoot, you cant score”
