Gadeside Rangers made comfortable progress into the next round of the Turner Trophies Challenge Cup after a demolition job of Division Two side Rifle Volunteer. The early part of the season has one recurring theme, Gadeside's inability to put the ball in the back of the net - and despite scoring six times, Gadeside contrived to miss a whole host of glorious chances. Had they taken half of them, it would have easily been double figures.
Gadeside were without Dan Campbell, Matt Evans and Russ Popplewell while Ben McDermott has returned to university. But Gadeside were always in control of the game and looked dangerous when they got the ball down the flanks. Mitchell and Nelmes both missed good early chances before Gadeside were awarded a penalty when Mitchell was tripped in the box. The striker picked himself up to score past Greg Jones.
That is how the theme of the first half went with Gadeside on the offensive but being far too guilty of overplaying at times and were left frustrated by a linesman's flag that was raised all too often against the visitng defence who liked to step up. Tom Mitchell was on target again but his goal was ruled out for offside and Gadeside only had the one goal to show for their dominance. The second half was a similar story as Gadeside overran their opponents. Tom Shurville was on hand to finish off a deep cross from Ian Freeman for 2-0 and then Dave Nelmes got the goal he deserved with a cross shot on the turn.
But for every goal they scored, Gadeside were guilty of fluffing just as many chances as Mitchell, Nelmes and Hills were all woefully off target. But the goals did keep coming and Shurville grabbed his second from close range and Mitchell also got his second with a cool finish after good play by sub Bartosz Wiernik. The final goal came in the last few minutes as Tom Shurville was freed by Daniel Brooks, danced round a couple of challenges before cooly finishing past Jones for a well deserved hat-trick.
A decent enough performance and job was done. Gadeside created enough chances to have won several games. Just hopefully they will start to be converted more often soon.
