Gadeside Reserves overcame a strong Everett Rovers side at King George's on a wet and windy Sunday morning to claim a win which means 2 wins and a draw in the league and can now be classed as a good start by the newly formed branch of Gadeside.
Gadeside didn't have it all their own way by any means as Everett (predominantly made up of the Woodside team who beat the 1st team to league title 3 years ago) came flying out of the traps and Gadeside had 'keeper Rob Metcalf to thank for the away team not taking a one, two or even three goal lead early on with a string of fine saves. Slowly but surely Gadeside woke up and a superb ball over the top from interim manager Jason Brownhill released Toby Zhou one on one with the 'keeper however his shot cannoned back off the post and his follow up was blocked to win a corner. The resultant corner was whipped in by Brownhill with the ball deflecting off a defender, somehow managing to lob the Everett goalie to where Stu Cartner was hovering to head home from virtually on the line.
A few minutes later and another great flick on to Toby Zhou, this time from goalscorer Cartner, saw the striker tussle with two defender before eventually being hauled down inside the Everett box and the referee instantly pointed to the spot. A few choice words from the Everett captain followed leaving the referee no choice but to dismiss the skipper before the penalty was taken. Jason Brownhill stepped up to take the spot kick and the ball was heading just inside the post albeit at a good height for the 'keeper who had guessed the right way and saved the kick. Shortly afterwards, a tackle from an Everett player on Balraj Singh in Gadeside's penalty box led to the player showing his frustration at the referee's decision verbally, an act which the referee again saw no other option than to give the Everett Winger a straight red and reduce the team to 9 men.
Gadeside made the extra men count at first exposing the gaps in the middle and defence and with a few minutes left of the half came the goal of the game as Brownhill picked the ball up on the edge of his own box, advanced forward and playing a one-two with Cartner and received the ball on half way before playing a well weighted ball for Toby Zhou to run onto and hold up until Brownhill had arrived in the box and this time he made no mistake from 12 yards firing past the advancing goalie.
The second half was a different story as Everett found the spirit and quality to create a number of chances and it took the efforts of Ben Higginson and Man Of The Match Fionntan Murphy, along with class 'keeper Metcalf to stop the away team scoring and consequently keep a consecutive Gadeside clean sheet. The ball wasn't closed down or kept well enough by Gadeside which made hard work of the win however the game was killed off eventually when Murphy's long ball found Cartner through unmarked who had time to round the goalie and claim his second of the match. Everett continued to press however nothing came of it and they eventually had their goalkeeper sent off for the same offence as the first two to take the early bath, finishing the contest with 8 men and losing 3-0.
