Gadeside Reserves were dumped out of the County Cup by an Old Elizabethans side who were playing there first game of the season with a brand new squad from their previous campaign. Gadeside started off the better side with an early chance created by Stu Cartner down the right hand side, drilling the ball across the six yard box to where Jason Brownhill hit a shot that was blocked by a defender as the ball seemed destined to find the bottom corner. After this there was another couple of chances created by the Gadeside attack who looked strong and dangerous everytime they went forward.
However, the visitors got the breakthrough when the ball was not cleared and bobbled around until it fell to one of the midfielders on the edge of the box who found the bottom corner on the half volley. After this, another spell of chances fell to Gadeside with Jason Brownhill somehow hitting over from virtually under the bar and Chris Fitzpatrick finding the top corner of the goal posts with an effort from 25 yards. The Old Elizabethans keeper then denied Brownhill when he saved a one-on-one which went through his legs but hit his ankle before hitting the post and going wide.
Had some of these chances been converted Gadeside could have pushed on from there but as the half went on it seemed it wasn't going to be our day. Two breakaway goals in the last five minutes of the half meant it was 3-0 to the visitors at half time and the game effectively over.
The second half brought more of the same with Gadeside creating chances throughout but not taking them and again they were made to pay as it was 4-0 with another goal on the counter by Old Elizabethans. Gadeside did finally get off the mark shortly after when Graeme Cole's cross found Rob Danks and he headed home for a goal on his Gadeside debut. As the half came to a close a good passing move from the away team carved Gadeside's defence apart and was finished with a shot into the top corner and rounded off a bad day all round for the Gadeside Reserves. 5-1 was a flattering score line and it could have been alot different if the Gadeside front line had their shooting boots on. On another day they could have scored 6 or 7. Back to the leage on Sunday and Gadeside will be looking to get back to winning ways and keep up the challange for the league title.
