Gadeside Rangers progressed to the third round of the Herts Senior Cup with a good win over Berkhamsted League champions AFC Boars. First half goals from Russ Popplewell and Tariq Khan set Gadeside on their way to a comfortable victory which could have been far more emphatic had the visiting keeper not pulled off a string of first class saves.
Gadeside started brightly with Tom Mitchell beating a defender on the left hand side and seeing his curling drive whistle past the far post. Dan Campbell then forced the AFC keeper into a superb save when diving full stretch to turn a powerful volley over the bar. Gadeside's dominance was finally rewarded on 18 minutes when Russ Popplewell scored with a rasping left footed half volley after Campbell had flicked on a right wing cross from Danny Everritt. Gadeside continued to press and doubled their lead on the half hour mark when Tariq Khan capitalised on the space given by the AFC defence to draw the keeper and fire in off the post. It could have been 3-0 when Campbell brought another good save by the keeper with a good shot on the turn.
AFC Boars came out with a little more purpose in the second half and enjoyed a spell of early pressure in the second half. Tom Oliver reacted smartly when pushing away a close range header but it was as close at the visitors came all game. At the other end Campbell was again thwarted by the outstretched arm of the visiting keeper and Popplewell saw another ferocious drive superbly tipped round the post. Gadeside showed a good sense of professionalism in closing the game out in the final stages to ensure their path through the next round where they will face St Albans Review league side Oaks at Westfield on 30th November.
