Gadeside Rangers took another step towards securing their first OSFL premier division title with this thumping of 10 man Reed Rangers in an embarrassingly one sided affair. Gadeside rattled up six goals in the first half but became sloppy in the second half and contrived to miss a host of clear cut chances.
After having to leave players out of the matchday squad in recent weeks, Adam Hills was forced into a reshuffle as James Bridges, Dan Campbell, Ben Higginson, Toby Zhou and Tariq Khan all missed out for various reasons. In a scrappy opening 10 minutes, neither side really took a grip of the game with the bobbly pitch causing problems. However, Gadeside were soon on top and the relentless pressure soon told as Jay Evans scored his first of the season with a peach of a free-kick which left the Reed keeper with no chance. This opened the floodgates as Gadeside scored with alarming regularity; an excellent move between Jason Brownhill and Evans saw the latter prance into the box before squaring to Tom Shurville who was left with the simple task of slotting into an empty net. It was soon 3-0 as Ivanz Mani rounded the keeper after being sent clear by Hills as Gadeside swiftly broke from a Reed corner.
Brownhill was instrumental in the fourth two minutes later when his exquisite pass from the left found the onrushing Shurville who scored with a lobbed finish. Reed were clearly shell-shocked and were left to gawp in amazement as Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen lookalike Danny Everritt slid home a deflected shot - his first goal since January 2006. Brownhill again turned provider for the sixth when his low cross found Adam Hills who drew the keeper before cooly finishing into the far corner. Hills should have added a 7th right on half-time when he rounded the keeper but dragged his shot wide of the post with the goal gaping.
Gadeside failed to get into the rhythm they had in the first half and their frustrations were obvious. Tom Shurville needless got himself booked after an altercation with a Reed player and Gadeside seemed unable to string two passes together. However chances still came and went as Justyn Walcott and Jay Evans both fired over when well placed while Hills headed wide from a pinpoint Mani cross. Hills did make amends when his low drive found its way through a set of bodies to nestle in the near corner while Ivanz Mani grabbed his second with a good finish after being sent clear by Danny Everritt. Mani should have completed his hat-trick when Hills presented him with open goal from a quickly taken free kick but the wingman somehow managed to hit the outside of the post. The woodwork was to rescue Reed twice more as Hills saw a thumping effort come back off the bar though he knows he should have scored while Brooks hit a post before firing the rebound wildly over.
Adam Hills commented after the game: "Well, it’s a win and its another step closer to the league title. We scored some good goals in the first half and played pretty well. But our second half display was not acceptable in all departments and whilst I cannot be unhappy with an 8-0 victory - we must learn to punish teams. We wouldn't all be so jolly had we missed some of the chances and then lost by the odd goal to AFC Rangers."
