Gadeside Rangers rounded off 2007 with another thumping of lowly Leavesden Green to make 10 wins from ten games as they chase their maiden OSFL championship. Dan Campbell, Ian Freeman and Daniel Brooks all grabbed a brace with Adam Hills and Tariq Khan also getting on the scoresheet.
It was all Gadeside from the word go and Adam Hills twice went close but was foiled by the impressive Leavesden stopper who was to have an inspired afternoon. Dan Campbell's header was superbly tipped over the bar while a Hills' header hit the outside of the post. Gadeside did have the ball in the net when Hills' whipped free kick went straight in but the referee overruled the goal for offside. But the relentless pressure did finally pay off when Campbell was freed by Tom Shurville and he ran through to slot past the keeper for 1-0. That was the signal for the floodgates to open as Ian Freeman grabbed his first of the season with a confident finish across the keeper and his second soon followed with the move of the game. Hills and Walcott combined down the left to free Campbell whose first time cross was met by Freeman with a well controlled volley into the far corner to make it 3-0. Gadeside should have added to their total with Campbell and Hills both off target while Campbell saw his superb volley acrobatically saved. Leavesden's only real attack saw a free-kick fired just over.
The second half was more of the same as Gadeside sliced through the visitors with alarming ease. Daniel Brooks made it four shortly after the break with a close range tap-in after Campbell had squared and Adam Hills finally got on the scoresheet with a deflected drive from 20 yards. Paul Bangs was impressive when coming on as a sub and slotted in well to a defence which was conceeded only 5 goals all season with Matt Evans and Tom Oliver assured as always with Justyn Walcott providing great strangth in defence and attack. It was 6-0 on 7-0 minutes when Dan Campbell grabbed his second - though how much he knew about no-one knows - as the ball deflected off his head after a Freeman shot was off-target.
Tariq Khan finally grabbed the goal he deserved with a close range volley from a Campbell cross while Ian Freeman spurned the chance of his first Gadeside hat-trick when he somehow shot over from 6 yards with the goal gaping. Daniel Brooks rounded off the scoring with a superb strike from 20 yards which fizzed across the keeper and in off the far post. A comfortable win to continue the great run.
After the game, player/manager Adam Hills was reflecting on the season so far: "Obviously, I am delighted with where we are but I have told the lads that the real business starts after Christmas. If you look at who we still have to play, we have a lot of hard games left against teams who near the top who will be desperate to beat us. But we have put ourselves in a very strong position and I am confident that we have the character and the squad to come away with a league and cup double come April."
