Gadeside Rangers headed the Olympian Premier Division after the second weekend of matches after they comfortably swept aside AFC Rangers with a classy display. A brace from Adam Hills and a late goal from Toby Zhou set Gadeside on their way.
Gadeside started well and should have been ahead within 5 minutes when Tom Shurville saw his header from an Ivanz Mani corner clip the top of the crossbar - though Shurville will know he should have scored. Rob Metcalf, returning in the home goal was quick off his line to save at the feet of James Hill and while the visitors put Gadeside under a bit of early pressure, the defensive partnership of Matt Evans and Ed Shurville was again solid as a rock. Gadeside looked dangerous when getting the ball wide and Jay Evans volleyed just wide from an Ian Freeman cross was Tom Shurville put Tariq Khan through but his first touch was poor and his weak shot straight at the AFC keeper.
The hosts did take the lead on 19 minutes when Khan found Adam Hills who twisted and turned past two defenders before hitting a swirving drive which the keeper could only push onto the post and deflect the ball home. It was generally one way traffic as Gadeside pushed forward in numbers looking for a second. It should have come just on half-time when Shurville put Khan clean through, but again his effort lacked conviction and was comfortable for the keeper.
The visitors came out fired up for the second period but Gadeside looked comfortable throughout. Tariq Khan again found space in the box but his header was straight at the keeper when it looked easier to score but the lead was doubled on the hour when Jay Evans danced his way through the defence only to be felled leaving referee Chambers no option but to award the penalty. Adam Hills cooly slotted home the penalty to put Gadeside in the driving seat. Following the goal, AFC Rangers striker James Hill felt it necessary to headbutt Evans out of the referee's view and somehow stayed on the pitch.
But it was not to dampen Gadeside's spirits and they continued to attack. A superb last ditch tackle denied Hills a hat-trick but a good day was rounded off with 5 minutes to go with a goal of the highest calibre; slick passing from defence to midfield saw Shurville find Hills who turned his marker before delivering a low cross which was steered home by Toby Zhou. Another sparkling display against one of the more fancied teams in the league puts Gadeside in a strong position.
