Gadeside Rangers rounded of their final fixture before the start of the season proper with another excellent display when disposing of old rivals Woodside with another high-tempoed first half display.
All the goals came in a frenetic first 45 minutes though it was the visitors who started brightly when twice getting in behind the Gadeside defence but Sam Green was on hand to save well. Both sides were competitive with some ferocious tackles going in and it was an off the ball incident which led to Gadeside's opening goal. Jay Evans was deliberately obstructed off the ball from a corner and Adam Hills tucked away the penalty to make it 1-0. A common feature of the pre-season fixtures has seen Gadeside look dangerous from set pieces with messrs Bridges and Shurville the main threats and this was apparant again here.
Gadeside doubled the lead on the half hour mark when Danny Everritt found Hills in field who turned inside and out before lashing a fierce drive into the far corner. Hills could have had a hat-trick when his close range effort was blocked on the line after good work by Tariq Khan but it was soon 3-0 when Khan himself cooly finished after good build up play by Zhou and Evans.
At the other end Ian Freeman cleared well under pressure after a deep cross was not cleared while Justyn Walcott thwarted several Woodside attacks with some meaty challenges. John Wilkins made it 4-0 with his first touch shortly after coming on when he finished well after an excellent pass by Brooks and with the score at 4-0 the game was effectively over. The second half was a closer affair as both sides made regular changes but Gadeside created the better chances with Khan and Zhou both going close.
It was a clear reflection of how far Gadeside have come in the last 18 months. The last time the sides met, Woodside won a close encounter 2-1 in the year they won the Olympian League. There are many positive signs and many a selection problem for player/manager Adam Hills ahead of the opening game of the season against The Old Shepherd on September 2nd.
