Gadeside Rangers ended their on a high-note with a well deserved victory over The Reindeer - a result which secures a 3rd place finish in the league. A wonder strike by Jay Evans set them on their way while late strikes by Tom Mitchell and Leo Yi ensured Gadeside gained the 3 points.
With Russ Popplewell and Matt Evans already missing through the injuries which forced them off during last weeks cup final, Gadeside were dealt further blows when Danny Everritt limped off after just 5 minutes and shortly after Ben Higginson followed leaving Gadeside to reshuffle their defence. Attacking up the steep slope, Gadeside found it hard going as The Reindeer enjoyed long spells of possession. However, Ian Freeman and Shanton Towle in defence stood up well to the visitors threat in the shape of Campbell and Davis.
It was Gadeside who had the best two chances of the half. First, Ivanz Mani's low cross was inches away from the onrushing Adam Hills while another Mani cross found Tom Mitchell whose powerful header was crucially blocked by a defender. The two sides went in 0-0 at the break with all to play for. It was more of the same, end to end - stuff it had been in the first half but Gadeside took the lead on 64 minutes through a moment of sheer class by Jay Evans.
Receiving a pass from Hills 25 yards from goal, Evans let fly with an unstoppable first time drive which arrowed like a missile into the top corner off the net giving Bushnell in the Reindeer goal no chance whatsoever. You will not see a better strike all weekend!! However, the lead lasted only 5 minutes when The Reindeer equalised after Gadeside failed to clear. With both sides chasing victory there was always going to be chances.
Hills went close with a header from a Mani cross was Huang Yi fired across the face of goal. It was Tom Mitchell who carved out the chance, darting in between defender and keeper before being tripped in the box. He cooly stepped up to slot home the penalty to give Gadeside the lead. The result was confirmed in the dying minutes when Toby Zhou released Huang Yi and he superbly drilled home the winner to seal Gadeside victory. A much needed win after the previous weeks disappointment and a good way to end the season.
