Gadeside continued their good league form with an easy victory over Riverside Royals to maintain their chase for that elusive Premier Division title. In truth it was embarrasingly easy for Gadeside against a Riverside team which seemed more concerned about arguing with themselves.
With Danny Everritt, Matt Evans, Shanton Towle and Rob Metcalf all missing through illness, Adam Hills - himself suffering with a chest infection started where he left off last week - in goal. Gadeside welcomed back Gary Cook, Tom Mitchell and Jay Evans (injury) and it was the returning Cook who fired Gadeside ahead in spectacular fashion on 14 minutes. Toby Zhou's cross was only half cleared and Cook rifled the ball back into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Tariq Khan twice went close while Ivanz Mani volleyed over from a Jason Brownhill free-kick before Gadeside did double their lead with a goal of extreme quality. Some neat passing between Cook, Brooks and Brownhill saw the latter pick out Tom Mitchell with a pinpoint cross and Gadeside's 'experienced' striker header home off the underside off the bar. Riverside threatened before half-time with a number of free-kicks but rarely went close. Hills made one save when palming away a strong drive just on the half-time whistle.
Gadeside enjoyed the vast majority of the play in the second-half but couldn't quite find that final quality. Tariq Khan turned well on a delightful pass from Brooks before firing against the post while Jay Evans just failed to connect with a Mani corner. It was 3-0 on the hour when a half cleared cross found Ben Higginson who smashed home his first goal for the club.
Tom Mitchell missed his kick in front of goal but soon made amends when a Riverside player was adjudged to have handled in the area and Mitchell comfortably tucked away the penalty to wrap a good day at the office for Gadeside. One which also saw them keep their first clean sheet of the season.
