Gadeside Rangers began life under new player-manager Adam Hills in fine style with a combative victory over Colne Valley as they progressed to the next round in the exciting Challenge Cup game.
It was the hosts who went into an early lead when Gadeside failed to clear allowing Dave Rooney to smash an unstoppable drive into the top corner. Gadeside started to get some joy with Mani and Popplewell down the wings and it was no surprise when Gadeside drew level when Tom Mitchell powerfully headed home from a near post cross. Soon after, Gadeside had the lead when Jay Evans was tripped in the box and Mitchell cooly dispatched the penalty to turn the tie on its head.
Valley drew level shortly after half-time as Gadeside fell asleep allowing Anscomb a free header from a corner. It was all change again as Valley regained the lead on the hour when Russ Popplewell was adjudged to have fouled Rooney and it was Valley's turn to convert their own penalty. However, in a topsy-turvy finale, Gadeside never refused to give up and drew level on 72 minutes.
Tom Mitchell completed a classy hat-trick as he curled a free kick into the far corner to bring the scores level at 3-3. Playing up the slope, Gadeside played some excellent football and looked the more likely winner. They finally grabbed the goal they deserved on 80 minutes when sub Hills converted from close range after good work by Popplewell on the left. It was the enigmatic Popplewell who wrapped up the game late as he chased through a long free kick before rounding the keeper and firing home.
Hills quoted after the game: "I am delighted with that performance. We showed some good battling skills and never gave up. This is a new era for this team and I am confident we can challenging for honours come the end of the season. This team is good enough - we just need some belief."
