Gadeside Rangers were left stunned as Headstone Athletic grabbed two late goals to turn this game on its head and snatch victory. The game will go down in folklore as one to forget as the game was at point abandoned and turned into a farce as chaos broke out. The match also saw the end of Darren Hufford's brief stint as manager of Gadeside.
With the visitors unbeaten so far, Gadeside knew they were in for a tough game but enjoyed the better of the first half. Russ Popplewell went close with a long range header while Adam Hills brought a good save from the eccentric visiting goalkeeper. They did take a deserved lead midway through the first half when a marauding run by Jay Evans was abruptly ended by a lunging challenge and Adam Hills cooly slooted the resulting penalty away.
It was more of the same in the second half as Gadeside pushed on. They should have doubled the lead when Daniel Brooks went clear. He rounded the keeper before his shot was stopped on the line by a Headstone defender. The referee awarded a penalty and sent the player off despite it clearly struck him square in the midrift. The game then turned sour as the referee abandoned the game.
Incredibly however, he allowed play to continue but allowed the player to return and did not award the penalty to Gadeside. The visitors inevitably drew level and even went on to win the game in the closing stages. The winning goal had Gadeside players in uproar. As the ball was played wide, a Headstone player was offside by a good few yards and the linesman flagged. However the referee played on and Headstone crossed to score the winner from close range.
The end of the game brought dramatic scenes in the Gadeside camp as Hufford and Gadeside parted company with Adam Hills taking over as player/manager.
